	ABSENCE PROJECTS

ab·sence (ăb′səns)

“How does absence look?It extends from a spacelesswithin to the edgeof what can be loved.”

Adapted from Carson, A. (2016). Autobiography of red: a novel in verse.
Toronto: McClelland &#38;amp; Stewart
What do we leave behind? How do we give form to the nonphysical? Within our
limits of perception, what can we trust? Through different exhibitions ‘Absence
projects’ questions the absence and awareness, conveyed into three-dimensional
forms, through space or time. Absence Project defines a model for the continued
and future autonomy of artists, creating our own space in the world.

Absence project #0 was launched in New York City, in December
2017

OMWENTELING #1 Exhibition

Opening on 24th of January 2019 from 7- 9.30 pm
24.01.2019 - 31.03.2019
Wilford XWilfordkaai 109140 Temse

Omwenteling / Revolution

The chosen works for the exhibition ‘ Omwenteling’ can be regarded as sculpture, art that operates in three dimensions. The artists who created these works all come from different backgrounds in the visual arts, photography, sculpture, painting or conceptual art. This creates an interaction that not only illuminates the work of art in itself but also questions the relationship between the works. The boundaries of the media have flowed into each other. A work of art that, because of the surface on which it is made, questions whether it is a painting or an sculpture. The three-dimensional works made by a painter sometimes seem to be more in line with classical sculpture than the work of a sculptor, an everyday object can get a different reading because of its materiality or the context in which it is placed. Whether it concerns a consideration of the domestic space and its architectural elements, a functional object, a more classical image or the carrier of a painted image, one comes to the sudden realization that every object can be perceived in different ways.

Some works seem to want to show a reality hidden behind the surface of things. Others seem to be either contemporary or from a different era. One work refers to another, a revolution in the experience of the Image.

The selected works string together an expansive questioning of absence and awareness,
conveyed into three-dimensional forms, through
space or time. The dialogue between these works by eight international artists
will happen on their common adoptive ground, in Brooklyn, New York. Absence Projects #0 defines a model for the continued and future autonomy of artists, creating our own space in the world.

Bio&#38;nbsp;

Falcone’s work tries to establish a dialogue with the history of painting, investigating from inside all the aspects of this medium. Falcone analyses Painting reusing old masters’ works and coping the same technics to appropriating and distorting them in his owns painting process. Falcone’s paintings are a combination of old and modern technics, where ancient’s recipes are sometimes mixed with digital manipulations. Blurring the limits in his painting, Falcone creates unclear and confusing atmospheres, switching indistinctly between figuration and abstraction.
Represented by gallery Archiraar, Brussels.Falcone was born in Palermo (Italy) in 1990. He grew up in Milano where he obtained the diplôma at the Liceo Artistico di Brera in 2008 and he continued to study Art History at Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera. In 2010 he moved to Brussels, where he attended the Painting course at ERG (École de Recherche Graphique). He finished his Master in Fine Arts in 2015 at KASK (Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten) in Gent, mentored by Narcisse Tordoir. During his studies in Belgium, he performed at Luc Tuymans exhibition’s opening at Bozar (2011) and took part in the group show Tranlation(s) at Bruxelles Congress (2012). In 2015, he had various solo exhibitions including In.visibile at Alson gallery (Milan) with an artwork from Tintoretto (1518-1594) and Ermetism I &#38;amp; II at Archiraar Gallery (Bruxelles) and at Croxhapox (Gent). Bio / Statement

Quinten Ingelaere’s paintings depict baroque, sometimes even burlesque compositions of allegories, opulent garlands, unconventional still lifes and evocative scenes. Even though no direct narrative exists between the works, a common alienating atmosphere prevails.
By adopting the imagery, strategies and techniques of old masters, the paintings of Quinten Ingelaere look seemingly very familiar upon first sight. Indeed, the paintings aim at a visual vocabulary and iconography that is rooted in our subconscious and our collective memory. All works make use of a learned and shared visual vocabulary.
However, not a single garland can be reduced to a composition of flowers; the alleged doves, fishes, angels and flowers are in fact amorphous / deformed structures that seem to operate in a parallel universe. Although the paintings of Quinten Ingelaere are essentially figurative they therefore also have a high degree of abstraction.
Quinten Ingelaere’s paintings interpret, redefine and decontextualize classic themes and iconography, and therefore operate as allegories of alienation. They do not only deceive the eye, they also wilfully deceive and challenge our shared visual language, cognitive maps and patterns of expectation.Quinten Ingelaere (°1985, Ghent) lives and works in Antwerp. He graduated (MFA) from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in 2009.Lambion (Museum M, Leuven), MAGMA, (Antwerp), “Master Maquette” (Verbeke Foundation, Kemzeke), Maison Grégoire (Brussels), “Beeldruim #3”, Nucleo (Ghent), “Retrospective / Introspective”, Dauwens &#38;amp; Beernaert (Brussels) and “A Belgian Politician”, Marion de Cannière (Antwerp). In 2014 CC Maasmechelen hosted his first major solo exhibition “Muscicapidae”.

Bio/Statement

Lucie
Lanzini's Lanzini’s body of work shows a hidden reality behind
the appearance of things. Her work opens a reflection on the domestic space and its architectural
components, on what holds and what
sticks. Her work consists of a set of architectural
and ornamental elements whose realization
and realism intrigues as much as their potential to become ruined. Through the molding technique, Lucie
Lanzini evokes the relation to memories and
tries to capture their absence to memorialize them. Passionate about the play
of material, the artist combines different techniques of sculpture to create the discrepancies and oppositions
that punctuate her work.

Lucie&#38;nbsp; Lanzini is born in 1986 in Belfort (France).

She studied at Ecole
Nationale des Beaux arts de Lyon (2004-2009). At Art Contest, she received the first price in 2010 and the Macors price at Médiatine in

Bio / Statement

Born in France in 1977 Emmanuelle Leblanc lives and works in Bordeaux. After getting her MFA from the Toulouse University, she obtained a postgraduate diploma in Design specialising in the study of colour.

Stemming from portrait tradition and photo-realism, Emmanuelle’s work evolves toward abstract minimalism, which tends to perpetuate the Color Field Experience practices. Thus, through her small or large canvases and sometimes, sculptural installations, the significance of the “figurative” image tends to gradually disappear only to re-emerge accidentally. The delicate, profound and diffuse colour variations of her recent paintings, offer a form of atmospheric synthesis of space, of moments or images traversed by memory. The hand of the artist disappears through the surface immateriality only to bring a sensorial and meditative experience to the viewer. In search of the sublime, it is a painting, which strives to re-activate a certain notion of aura.

Emmanuelle Leblanc has exhibited in different galleries and art institutions in France and abroad : Courtauld Insitute (GB), galerie Xenon (Fr), galerie Kh15 (De), Muséo San Prisco (It), galerie Keitelman (Be). Shortlisted consecutively in 2013 and 2014 for the Prix International de Peinture of Vitry-sur-Seine, her work can also be found in several private collections in Europe.

The artist is the co-founder of Pleonasm a European platform, which promotes contemporary visual artists. She has curated since 2013 through Pleonasm : (Phosphene) and Seuil in 2014 (Fr, Be), Riverside in 2015 (Fr) and Eidôlon in 2015 (Fr).&#38;nbsp;
Represented by gallery Archiraar, Brussels.

Bio/ Statement

The work of Caroline Le Méhauté
intimately questions our relationship to matter, space and time as the first
contacts of our relationship to the world. Starting from elements of the
terrestrial and space, her sculptures, installations, drawings, videos and
sound practice propose a broadened perception where the questions of the
immensity, the imperceptible and the incommensurable are presented in relation
to experience. How to situate oneself, to position oneself and to establish one's
place, are questions she develops in her practice to determine the impact that these
can have on ourselves, our relationship to the other, to society and to the world.
Caroline Le Méhauté lives and works in Brussels.
Nomadic artist, her taste for discovery makes her move to new contexts of
research and creation. After a master's degree in visual arts at the University
of Toulouse Jean-Jaurès, she continued her studies at the National School of Fine
Arts in Marseille where she graduated in 2007. That same year she participated
in the Biennial of Young Artists of Europe and the Mediterranean in Italy.
Her work has since been presented in solo and
collective exhibitions including: Le Musée National du Burkina Faso,
Ouagadougou; Marseille-Provence 2013 Capitale Européenne de la Culture ; Art in
the time of crisis, Fez, Maroc; Médiatine (Brussels); Block T (Dublin); West
Postfuhramt, Berlin; Spazio Testoni, Bologna. Her works feature in private and
public collections, including: the Communal Fund of Contemporary Art
(Marseille); Leo Lagrange Art Library (Paris).

		<description>Alexandra Leyre Mein︎ alexandraleyremein.com

Bio / StatementAlexandra Leyre Mein works capture the everlasting battle between human unconscious desires and the intellectual self. She translates these themes into figurative or abstract sculptures that are both contemporary and yet seem to come from another age. Movement and tension emerges from the encounter between organic forms and clean, pristine, edged shapes in her plaster sculptures, symbolizing human nature and its societal/environmental interactions. These complex relationships are portrayed using multifaceted sculptural forms, each facet exposing a unique perspective. The characteristic unfinished aspect of her sculptures reinforces the feeling of movement, as in a three-dimensional sketch. They can be interpreted as if still in construction and growing, although they might also be seen as being at the dawn of their demise. This duality of interpretation is central to her work.

Alexandra Leyre Mein (Brussels, Belgium 1979) graduated from the fashion department at the Royal academy of Antwerp. In 2008 she switched over to visual arts, and started sculpting as an autodidact. Her work has been exhibited in Europe at Palais d’Iléna, White House gallery, Aeroplastics, Maison Particulière, Botanique, and in New York at the Clemente Center, New House Center for Contemporary Art, and Anton Kern Gallery. Besides her sculptural practice, Alexandra continues to work with dancers and choreographers. She has designed and made sets and costumes in collaboration with e.g., Damien Jalet. These creations have been shown at Palazzo Fortuny, during the Venice Biennial, the festival d’Avignon, and at the Louvre in Paris. Alexandra now lives and works between Brussels, Belgium and Brooklyn, USA.

Bio / StatementSofie Mullers (° 1974 St-Nicolas, lives in Ghent) complex oeuvre displays an ongoing, profound research of the human condition and the beauty of our individual vulnerability. The main recurring themes are imperfection and psycho-physical trauma. She taps into the breaking point of the mind and body and portrays it in smoke drawings and sculptures in bronze or alabaster.Until three years ago Sofie Muller was known for her 'child images', innocent figures in less innocent contexts, epoxy and bronze. In the meantime the artist has passed the children's theme and she has dedicated herself on stone carving. It is a logical step in an investigation of, as the artist calls it herself, 'geology' and 'psyche'. Her most recent work includes human, battered heads of alabaster: a non-obvious and rare material in the world of sculpture. The rough stone imitates human skin in color, semi-transparency and grain; the break lines are synonymous with the (mental) scars that a person gains in his life. Muller deliberately searches for 'hurt' pieces of stone with natural erosion and a 'lived' look as the basis for her 'mental portraits'. In some sculptures, the artist brings together different rocks, such as minerals, marble and Iranian travertine. Inspired by classical sculpture (the artist is a descended from three generations of antique dealers), Muller's sculptures are expressions of an equally classic and timeless theme: torments of the soul. Macabre and poetic as they are, they confront the viewer with psychological injuries that we would rather not see and want to deal with. A source of inspiration for those who are open to the beauty of imperfections.
